RAIPUR: With an eye on this December's assembly elections, the ruling BJP in Chhattisgarh kicked off an ambitious scheme on Wednesday to give rice at Rs 3 per kg to nearly 34 lakh families living below the poverty line in 15 districts. The scheme will cost Rs 837 crore.Each BPL family would get 35 kg of rice every month. The scheme was simultaneously launched in all the districts by BJP's top leaders.
Former chief minister of Jharkhand, Arjun Munda, and former deputy CM of Maharashtra, Gopinath Munde, former Union ministers Murli Manohar Joshi, Bandaru Dattatreya, Vikram Verma, Ravishankar Prasad and M Venkaiah Naidu were among others who launched the scheme in different districts of Chhattisgarh.
Modi, who addressed a huge gathering at Ambikapur, praised the Raman Singh government for launching the scheme on the auspicious occasion of 'Makar Sankranti'.
